The Yamas and Niyamas Book Club

to Apr 12

The Yamas and Niyamas Book Club

Yoga is a system that extends far beyond doing the poses; it is a way of living. The Yamas and Niyamas are foundational to all yogic thought - they are guidelines, ethics, and tenets that lead individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action. Each Yama and Niyama has its own chapter, and the philosophy of each guideline is explained through practical examples and relevant stories. This is a book that is easy to read and amazing to share.

Meetings are Tuesday evenings @7:15pm – 3/1, 3/8, 3/15, and 3/22.

Cost is $49 (the book is not included). Registration required.

Can be applied to YA Continuing Ed. as 3 CEC’s in philosophy.

Yogis are known to practice 108 Sun Salutations during the change of seasons, repeating Surya Namaskar A 108 times, (no worries, we will take breaks along the way). Restorative Teacher Training Level 1
Feb
20
to Feb 21

Restorative Teacher Training Level 1

Restorative Yoga uses long-held, supported poses to cultivate conscious relaxation and most importantly, to release unnecessary habitual tension in the body and mind. Restorative Yoga is about just being, not doing.

The effort involved in Restorative Yoga is the ability to look at how and where we are holding tension. Restorative Yoga is the willingness to relax our body, and allow the breath to come in more, so the tension can be softened and released. Discovering where and how we hold tension helps us find room for change so that our physical, emotional, and mental wellness is not limited, and we find comfort in our body.

You will learn how to guide yourself or students through a practice of Restorative Yoga that helps them release layers of tension, engage the relaxation response, and feel more at ease in their bodies. Through lectures, readings, and discussions you will explore how the gross anatomy, subtle energy, emotional body, and mental body can work together in the restorative poses. Upon completion, you will be able to create, guide, and practice a customized Restorative Yoga sequence.

TRAINING COVERS TOPICS SUCH AS:

• The nervous system and stress

• Science of the relaxation response & working with the nervous system and subtle body energies

• Alignment, propping, and application of essential restorative poses

• Foundations for building a restorative practice, including basic sequencing, guiding students through transitions, breathwork, and cueing

• Supporting the mind-body emotional connection through conscious relaxation

This training is for certified Yoga teachers looking to add to their teaching repertoire or any yoga practitioner interested in learning about this practice. It can also be used as continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance.

Saturday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 21 12-5pm at The Angel Wing

Please register before Feb. 10th - $275 - Pre-registration is required, and spots are limited to maintain social distancing, and masks are worn throughout.

108 Sun Salutations to celebrate Summer Solstice - Outdoors

Sun Salutes rescheduled from June 20th, Summer Solstice to Saturday, June 27th. Join me for this amazing tradition. The group energy carries you through this vigorous practice. We will complete 108 rounds of Surya Namaskar A, Sun A. Reaching high to honor the Sun then bowing to the Earth, we are the connection between the two. In Yoga, the 108 Sun Salutes are often done to honor change, for example, a change in season or to bring peace and understanding at a time of uncertainty.

Why 108? The number 108 is recognized as significant in many religions (108 beads on both the Hindu Japa Mala and the Catholic Rosary bead, referred to in Islam as well as in mathematics, astrology. In Hinduism, it refers to spiritual completion. The number 108 is seen in many disciplines but in a simplistic viewpoint, the auspicious number 108 connects science with the human body, mind, and spirit.

Power of the Heart - Heart Opening Power Yoga Class

In this power class the sequence will focus on preparing your body for deeper heart opening/backbending asanas. Backbends allow us to start opening the muscles in our torso that typically tend to hold and block energy from flowing freely. When we create space for the energy to flow, it moves up to our heart center allowing us to practice compassion for ourselves and others. There will be attention to the lower chakras that lead up to the 4th energy wheel, Anahata, heart chakra. Balancing our ability to give and to receive compassion. Class will end with a longer help restorative pose.
